About This Blog...

Steve began working with the Pitman church in August, 2007. He has brought a wealth of ministry experience to us: children's, youth, and adult ministries, Children's Home work, and teaching experience from the pre-school to university levels.

Steve and his twelve (yes, twelve!) siblings were raised by parents who worked in Christian Children's Homes for over 35 years. Steve received his B.A. and M.A. in Education from Harding (1974, 1975). Later, Steve completed a master's equivalent and his PhD in Human Performance at Indiana University (IU). Steve has thirteen years of teaching experience at the college level for IU and York College, in York, NE. Steve's childhood and ministry experiences impressed on him that many families are in need of "wounded healing." So, in 1992, Steve obtained a Master's Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Abilene Christian University in Abilene, TX.

Steve and Patti Klein Sikes have been married for 39 years (December 30) and have four children and 3 grandchildren.

June 12, 2012

My wife, Patti, and I remember the job interview weekend of June 8-10, 2007, with the Pitman church so clearly!  It was my first visit ever to NJ!  It was filled with: meetings with families, Dan and Dottie, the elders and their wives, the search committee, class and worship on Sunday – all followed by an open Q & A session Sunday afternoon at the Krinks.  Whew!

Interestingly enough, after much singing and communing together, our first Sunday morning service centered on the appointment of seven deacons.  Five years later, to the day (June 10, 2007 – June 10, 2012), our service this morning will focus on Christ-like serving and the appointment of seven more deacons!

The following are my journal excerpts from five years ago:

SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 2007 (5:30 am)

“Good morning, Lord!  The birds are singing Your praises!  You are good!  You are holy!

Whatever happens to Patti and me – thank You for doing something very wonderful with this Pitman church family.  They’re open, honest, relational, loving, loving, loving!  I can’t get over how much they love one another!  Plus, I hear and see “unity” through and through!  Love and Unity – what we are to be known for; Love and Unity – what Jesus prayed for (John 13:34-35; 17:20-23).  Thank You!  Your prayers are being answered here in a small hamlet in South Jersey!

Give me strength and wisdom today, O God!  Anoint me with your power and grace.  Move in and through Patti and me so that You alone may be glorified… I need Your wisdom, foresight, insight, Holy Spirit sight…. Help me!  Empower me for cross-life victory today!”

SATURDAY NIGHT, JUNE 9, 2007

“What an amazing evening!  You are doing something so special here in Pitman!  Love, Unity, Mission, Encouragement!  More than I’ve ever seen anywhere!”

God’s work, God’s people, God’s glory!

God is good!

Mr. Steve
